The Townsend Wing Chair was inspired by the original antique frame attributed to John Townsend of Newport, Rhode Island. Carved into the wing is 'R.I. 1764'. Hickory Chair purchased the antique frame in 1981 and its classic form, exacting scale and proportion have allowed it to stand the test of time. Characteristics for which John Townsend was noted is the stop-fluting on the front legs, his signature deep cheek of the wings and he is believed to have been the first cabinetmaker in America to add a curved front rail to the seat of his "easy chair" now authentically reproduced by Hickory Chair. Medium Mahogany is the standard finish. Spring-Down seat cushion standard. Parchment paint and optional NS-08 nail head trim shown. Also shown below, Special Construction version as the Townsend Tufted Settee. Settee shown as extended to 76-inches with hand-tufted back, seat, inside arms and wings.
