Thomas Pheasant conceived the Atelier series as a more lightly scaled and tightly upholstered look. The frame takes a more prominent role, and the upholstered backs are recessed. The legs are flared in the neoclassic tradition. Where the upholstery meets the wood frame, the cushion actually extends over the top to create a cap of sorts. That makes the construction part of the visual appeal-like a complex joint Baker might use on a large cabinet. As a design element, each item also has a distinctive ribbed Bronze finger pull. The crisp neoclassical look of the Atelier Side Chair allows its demeanor to change with the fabric. The legs are capped by an edited nail trim detail that can be either traditional or modern. The pitch, related geometry, and support have been designed to offer the comfort expected of Baker.
